Pucon sits on the shore of Lago Villarrica in Chile's Lake District, dominated by the perfect cone of Volcan Villarrica — one of the most active volcanoes in South America, with a permanent lava lake glowing in its crater. The town has positioned itself as Chile's adventure capital, and the range of activities available in a 30-kilometer radius is hard to match anywhere in the country.
Climbing Volcan Villarrica
The headline activity. A guided day trip to the summit at 2,847 meters — roughly 6-8 hours round trip, involving crampons, ice axes, and a steep slog up a snowfield to the crater rim. The lava lake is not always visible (cloud and gas obscure it on many days), but on clear days the view takes in a chain of volcanoes stretching south into Patagonia and north toward Santiago.
Tours cost $80-120 per person including gear. Guides cancel frequently due to weather and volcanic activity — build at least two possible days into your schedule. The climb is strenuous but non-technical. Basic fitness is required; mountaineering experience is not. Most operators require participants to be between 15 and 65 years old.
Hot Springs
Volcanic activity means hot water everywhere. The options near Pucon:
- Termas Geometricas: The most beautiful hot springs in Chile — seventeen slate pools connected by red walkways through a fern-draped canyon. About an hour south of Pucon. $30 entry. Worth every peso.
- Termas de Huife: Three outdoor pools at different temperatures in a forested setting. 30 minutes from town. More developed, with a restaurant and massage services.
- Termas Los Pozones: Rustic riverside pools — less polished but more atmospheric. Evening sessions by candlelight are popular.
Outdoor Activities
Whitewater rafting: The Rio Trancura has Class III-IV rapids running through forest. Half-day trips ($30-50) are the most popular activity after the volcano climb. The upper section is more challenging; the lower section suits beginners.
Huerquehue National Park: About 35 kilometers east of Pucon. The Los Lagos trail climbs through araucaria (monkey puzzle) forests to three crystal-clear mountain lakes. A full day hike — roughly 18 kilometers round trip. One of the best day hikes in the Lake District.
Canyoning: Rappelling down waterfalls in the forests around Pucon. Several operators offer half-day trips for beginners. Wet, cold, and exhilarating.
Mountain biking: Trails through araucaria forests and along the lakeshore. Bike rental is easy to find in town. The Ojos del Caburga trail to a series of turquoise pools is a popular ride.
Lake Villarrica: Black volcanic sand beaches, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and boat tours. The water is cold but swimmable in January-February. Playa Grande is the main beach in town.
Ski Season
The Villarrica ski resort operates on the volcano's flanks from June through September. The terrain is limited — a few lifts and about 20 runs — but skiing on an active volcano above a turquoise lake is a novelty you will not find elsewhere. Day passes are around $40. Equipment rental is available in Pucon.
The Town
Pucon is small and geared entirely toward tourists — gear shops, tour agencies, restaurants, and bars line the main streets. It has more energy than most Chilean towns its size, especially in summer when backpackers, Chilean families, and adventure travelers fill it up. The Feria Artesanal (craft market) sells Mapuche textiles and woodwork. Nightlife is modest but exists — a few bars with live music on weekends.
Getting There
Fly from Santiago to Temuco (ZCO) — about 1.5 hours — then drive or bus to Pucon (1.5 hours). Overnight buses from Santiago to Pucon take about 10 hours and are comfortable in semi-cama class ($20-30). Driving from Santiago takes roughly 8 hours on the Pan-American Highway.
Time needed: Three days covers the volcano, hot springs, and a day hike. A week lets you add rafting, canyoning, and lazy days by the lake.
