Chile's extreme length — 4,300 kilometers from the tropics to near-Antarctica — means there is no single climate. The north is desert, the center is Mediterranean, the south is wet temperate forest, and the far south is sub-Antarctic. Understanding the weather patterns by region is essential for packing and timing your trip.

Seasons

Chile is in the southern hemisphere — seasons are reversed from North America and Europe:

  • Summer: December through February. Peak tourism season. Longest days (16+ hours of daylight in the south).
  • Autumn: March through May. Foliage in Patagonia and the Lake District. Harvest festivals in wine regions. Shoulder pricing.
  • Winter: June through August. Ski season in the Andes. Patagonia largely inaccessible. Santiago gets rain and smog. Atacama at its clearest for stargazing.
  • Spring: September through November. Wildflowers in the north (desierto florido in rare bloom years). Patagonia opens up. Shoulder pricing.

What to Pack

Atacama: Sunscreen (SPF 50+), sunglasses, a warm layer for nights and altitude. Temperatures swing 20-30 degrees between day and night. A windproof jacket for the altiplano.

Santiago and Central: Light clothing in summer. A jacket for air-conditioned restaurants. In winter, a warm coat and umbrella.

Patagonia: Layers. A waterproof outer shell is non-negotiable — it will rain. Merino base layers, fleece mid-layer, waterproof jacket and pants. A warm hat, gloves, and buff for wind. Sunglasses and sunscreen even in overcast conditions (UV is intense this far south).

Lake District: Rain gear year-round. Temperatures are mild but rain comes without warning. An umbrella and waterproof shoes make a bigger difference than a heavy coat.

Desierto Florido

In rare years when heavy rain falls on the Atacama, dormant seeds bloom and the desert floor turns into a carpet of wildflowers — purple, pink, yellow, white. The phenomenon occurs roughly once every 5-7 years, typically between September and November. It is unpredictable — local tourism boards announce blooms when they happen. The most spectacular displays have occurred near Copiapo and Vallenar.

El Nino and La Nina

El Nino years bring heavier rainfall to central Chile and can cause flooding and landslides. La Nina years are drier. Both patterns affect the timing and amount of snowfall in the Andes, which in turn affects ski seasons and summer river levels for rafting. Check seasonal forecasts before booking outdoor activities.
