Chile stretches from the tropics to the sub-Antarctic, so there is no single best time to visit — it depends entirely on where you are going. The seasons are flipped from the northern hemisphere: summer is December through February, winter is June through August.

Peak Season (December - February)

Chilean summer. The entire country is accessible, weather is warmest, and days are long — up to 16 hours of daylight in the south. This is when Chileans take their own holidays, so domestic flights fill up, Patagonia refugios sell out, and coastal towns get crowded. Prices are highest. Book accommodation and Torres del Paine reservations well in advance.

Shoulder Season (October - November, March - April)

The sweet spot for many travelers. Weather is still good in most regions, crowds thin out, and prices drop. Spring (October-November) brings wildflowers to the Atacama in rare bloom years. Autumn (March-April) turns Patagonia's forests golden and coincides with the wine harvest in the central valleys.

Winter (June - August)

Limited options in the south — Patagonia largely shuts down and the Lake District gets constant rain. But Santiago is mild, the Atacama has its clearest skies, and the ski resorts above Santiago open for business. Winter is also the cheapest time to fly to Chile.

Festivals and Events

  • Fiestas Patrias (Sep 18-19): Chile's independence celebrations. Barbecues, rodeos, cueca dancing, and a lot of red wine. The country essentially shuts down for a week. Book everything early or avoid traveling domestically during this period.
  • Tapati Rapa Nui (Feb): Two-week cultural festival on Easter Island. Traditional competitions, carving, and dance. Accommodation books out months ahead.
  • Vendimia (Mar-Apr): Wine harvest festivals across the central valleys. Grape stomping, tastings, and open cellar doors.
  • New Year's Eve in Valparaiso: One of the largest fireworks displays in South America, launched from the bay. The entire city becomes a party.
